The Poet in Pieces by Fiza Pathan
Broken flower pots and unattended rose bushes
Care to tell me some more about the way you have neglected me
The door you left open stands still awake to all your torments
And poetry still flows out from inside the house you let slip away
Within this abode of withered hopes and pent-up demons
Calls a cackling hag now to you who you once wrote love letters to
The skeleton framed cat still hangs about
To scratch a piece of dirty meat from my ink stained claws
But you did not come-you did not once come
The carpet so blood red sits still and dusty below my feet
My fears no more lament with me
For what you have not done to brush it by
Go on-go ahead -laugh at the wine gorged dream of dreams
Wine glasses too break in shatters over a heap of unpaid bills
Van Gogh’s self-portrait lies tipsy upon my kitchen wall
His eyes so blue drown me into a picture
With your arms around my neck-soft and now out of sight.
Music no longer echoes through this empty hole within my breast
Unanswered letters are not remembered now
Only my head aches with lack of sweet nightingale sleep
